The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), an integrity organization, has reported 64 cases of suspicious betting activities to the authorities during the first quarter of 2023, with tennis and esports being the main sports of concern.

European cooperation

Increased cooperation between European law enforcement agencies, sports federations, and gambling companies has been established to combat the rising risks of match-fixing caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Khalid Ali, CEO of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), said " After a difficult 2020, many operators seem to be close to normality in terms of market supply before the pandemic" .

The latter also stated that this is reflected in the suspicious bets identified by the members of the IBIA in the first quarter, as the sports that have traditionally dominated the global betting offer, namely tennis and football, are returning.

Ali added that " The association and its members continue to work closely with these sports, and in fact, all sports that wish to engage with us, to identify potential corruption and seek severe sanctions to punish and deter such illicit activities. "

Encouraging figures

“After a difficult 2020, many operators seem to be close to normality in terms of market supply before the pandemic. »

Figures from the 2020 IBIA Annual Report released earlier this year revealed that the body had received 270 suspicious reports , a 48% increase from the 183 alerts reported in 2019.

However, the IBIA said the figures are "consistent with the 266 and 267 alerts reported in 2017 and 2018 respectively".

Table tennis, which was one of the few sports available for certain parts of 2020, was partly responsible for the increase, receiving five match reports from the Czech Republic, one from Portugal, 13 from Russia, and 25 from Ukraine.

The IBIA report for the first quarter of 2023 only shows a total of seven reports table tennis matches, compared to a maximum of 26 recorded in the second quarter of 2020.

The total of 64 suspicious reports in Q1 is also broadly similar to the 68 cases in Q4 2020, as well as the 61 alerts reported in Q1 2020.

A return to normality hailed by the bodies responsible for the integrity of online betting!
